Youth Star has assisted 193 (101 female) Out of School Children in Kg. Thom, Prey Veng, and Kratie get back to school. Cumulatively since 2016, we have helped 969 (447 girls) OSC return to school: among which 139 OSC (81 female) completed primary schools, and 746 (336 girls) were promoted to the next year of study.
Volunteer Recruitment
20 new volunteers (10 female) were successfully recruited. The increasing female proportion of volunteers, from 45% (10/22) in 2016 to 50% in 2017 has been very rewarding, and mirrors an increase in the # of female youth club members who serve as our community volunteers.
Post-service Job Placements for Youth Star Volunteer
100% (18/18) of Youth Star volunteers (9 female) have found employment within two months of completing their service.
Youth Club Operations
22 existing Youth Clubs with 637 members (415 female) are operating across our volunteers’ placements, and 14 of them are officially recognized as CBOs. The clubs outputs have shown improvement across a number of core activities: reading, teaching, tutoring, communication, leadership and team working. Currently there are 578 youth club members volunteering as small teachers and reading facilitators to support OSC and slow learners through tutoring classes and reading clubs.
Reading Club
Youth Star volunteers undertake monthly backpack mobile libraries with active participation from Reading Group Facilitator Volunteers. Youth Star now has 25 reading groups, and they have jointly conducted their reading activities 936 times, with participation from 2,813 readers (1,223 female). We have seen a significant change in the habits of children since they have attended reading sessions: they participate more in the session and continue to borrow books to read at home (1,166 books borrowed during this year).
Tutoring Class
Tutoring classes are conducted by volunteers and their small teachers. They cover Khmer, English, Mathematics, Song, and Dancing Performance. The aim is to get students excited and happy to learn. The youth club members are also trained as Small Teacher so that they can assist YS volunteers to teach other young students. In 2017, YS volunteers and small teachers were running 122 tutoring classes with 3,032 students (1,852 female) in our 3 targeted provinces. Amongst those 534 (213 female) are slow learners and 316 (162 female) are OSC.
